kindle fire ipad Apple vs Amazon: Battle for Tablet Dominance

Still on the subject of iPad vs Kindle, while an all-out Tablet War has yet to be declared , Amazon’s Kindle could already be giving Apple’s iPad a strong competition in the Tablet’s booming and lucrative market.

Analytics company IDC revealed that Apple is down to 54.7 percent in the last quarter of 2011 from last quarter’s impressive 61.5 percent global Tablet marketshare. Amazon’s Kindle Fire reportedly shipped 4.7 million tablets in the last quarter of the previous year bringing up their total to 16.8 percent and helping elevate Android’s market share from a strong 32.3 to an even stronger 44.6 percent.
The data, though impressive, still does not look like trouble for Apple. Their shipments are still up by 4.3 million units from the previous quarter. IDC attributes the iPad’s decrease of market share in the Tablet arena to Amazon Kindle’s strong debut owing to its low price tag.
Apple can easily bounce back from the decline with the new iPad launching early this week, not to mention the $100 price-slash for iPad 2. It is interesting to note though, that Amazon’s Kindle, despite being a relatively new challenger has quickly chewed off a signicant amount from Apple’s tablet market share.
Both companies are expected to go head-to-head in the coming days, and who dominates who remains to be seen.
