India's 'Pocket Hercules' turns 100

Manohar Aich, India's first Mr Universe, turned 100 on Sunday. Nicknamed 'Pocket Hercules' because of his compact 4-foot-11-inch frame, Aich won the world bodybuilding title in 1952. He overcame many hurdles, including poverty and a stint in jail, before he won the Mr Universe title. Aich says the secret to long life is a healthy diet and his ability to be happy. In 1942, Aich joined the RAF and took to weight training. Some years later he was jailed for protesting against colonial oppression and that is when he began weight training effectively. In 1950, he won a Mr Hercules contest and this spurred him on to set his sights on the Mr Universe tournament in London, which he eventauly won in 1952. After that he went on to win several contests, including the Asian Bodybuilding Championship.

Samsung SCX-4500 – Low of features

Samsung SCX-4500 is a mono multifunction device and a unique thing about this printer is that it is really attractive. Manufacturers usually don’t make beautiful printers and hence this was a welcome change that I saw in my labs. The feature set of this printer is very basic though. I haven’t reviewed any mono laser multifunction devices between $250 to $350 and hence I will make comparisons only to the more expensive devices. The cost of this device is $300 but I would recommend you to spend a bit more and go for the $400 more expensive printers because they have good feature set to offer for this price bump. You get goodies like advanced task features, auto duplexers, automatic document feeders, network-readiness, and fax capability. It really makes sense to spend the extra buck.

For instance, there is the Canon ImageClass MF4690 which costs $400 and comes with automatic document feeder, manual feed tray, fax capabilities, USB port (front-mounted) that can be used for printing and scanning, built-in duplexer, and Ethernet port for easy networking – all this just for $100 more. Samsung SCX-4500 is alluring but still you must know about the things that you don’t get.
In my lab tests, the Samsung SCX-4500 was slower than other multifunction devices in the competition which is not really surprising considering that it is $100 cheaper. Black text was printed at 13.05 ppm or pages per minute. It is one ppm slower than Canon MF4690 and much slower than the Dell 1815dn and the Lexmark X342n. Black graphic prints were slower at 12.68 ppm. For both the grayscale and color scans, the speed was somewhere in the middle at 6.20ppm along with grayscale and 4.80ppm for color.

I compared the Samsung SCX-4500 to Samsung SCX-4200, its sibling. The price of SCX-4200 is less by $180 but the task speeds are on par with that of SCX-4500. I also compared it to office-oriented inkjet multifunction costing $300 – HP OfficeJet Pro L7680. There are more inkjet printers in this price point. Samsung SCX-4500 was faster amongst the two but the feature set on HP is much better.
On the other hand, the Samsung model makes up for the slower speeds through better task quality. Black text prints nicely dark, clean and crisp. Grayscale graphics too were good but it had some minor cross hatching which I won’t complain about since it is common in such low priced printers.

Samsung Securities says 7″ ‘iPad mini’ Coming in Q3 2012

A leaked document from the investment bank of Samsung has unveiled that the company believes Apple is planning to reveal its 7-inch “iPad mini” device in the 3rd quarter of 2012, and is interested in flexible AMOLED displays for future generations of its tablet PCs. Egypt confirms release of Brazilian hostages

CAIRO (AFP) - Two Brazilian women tourists kidnapped by Bedouins Sunday in the Sinai peninsula were released hours later, Egyptian police confirmed Monday.
"The security services have succeeded, in cooperation with Bedouin leaders, to obtain the release of two Brazilian tourists who were kidnapped with a guide and a member of the Egyptian tourist police," a police source told AFP, stressing that all four were safely released.
A Brazilian foreign ministry spokesman said that the two tourists, aged 18 and 45, were taken back to their hotel where the rest of the passengers on the bus they were traveling on are staying.
"Regarding the Brazilians, we do know that they are in good health," the spokesman added.
Dejair Batista Silveiro, father of one of the women and witness to the kidnapping, told Brazilian media that he had spoken to his daughter Sara after their release.
"She's alive. I spoke to her by telephone after and she said 'Daddy, I'm fine'," he said.
Two armed Bedouin stopped the tour bus containing 38 tourists at gunpoint, before driving off with their hostages towards the peninsula's mountains, a police official said.
One of the kidnappers was said to be the father of a man sentenced to prison on drugs and weapons charges, and that he wanted his son's release.
The tourists had been returning from a visit to the historic monastery of St Catherine in southern Sinai.
The incident marked the third kidnapping of foreign tourists in two months in the Sinai.
In February, Bedouin demanding the release of jailed tribesmen kidnapped three South Korean tourists in the same area, shortly after the abduction of two American women and their Egyptian tour guide.
The tourists and the guide were all released quickly and unharmed in that case also, as were 25 Chinese workers seized at the end of January.
The sparsely populated region is where Egypt's most lucrative tourist resorts are located, as well as being home to a mostly poor and disaffected Bedouin population.
Since an uprising overthrew president Hosni Mubarak last year, the Sinai has grown even more lawless, with attacks on police stations and almost monthly bombings targeting a pipeline that exports gas to neighbouring Israel.
The Bedouin have pressed hard for the release of captive tribesmen they say have been sentenced unfairly on charges ranging from terrorism to drugs dealing.
On Friday, dozens of heavily armed tribesmen agreed to end an eight-day long siege of an international peacekeepers' camp in the north of the peninsula after the military promised to look into their demand.
The Bedouin said they would give the military a month to meet their demand for the release of jailed tribesmen, some convicted on terror charges. None of the peacekeepers, tasked with monitoring a treaty with Israel, was harmed.
Egypt's military, in power since Mubarak's ouster, tried to quell Islamist radicals in the peninsula with limited success last year, and the authorities now appear to prefer negotiating with armed tribesmen.
The military has already pardoned 18 Bedouin outlaws sentenced by military tribunals in absentia, while a state security court ordered a new trial for five Bedouin accused of deadly bombings in two Sinai tourist resorts in 2004.

The God issue: New science of religion

Can't live with him, can't live without him. In a special series of articles we lay out a new vision that resets the terms of the debate

In our enlightened world, god is still everywhere. In the UK, arguments rage over "militant atheism" and the place of religion in public life. In the US, religion is again taking centre stage in the presidential election. Try as we might, we just don't seem to be able to let go.

Perhaps that is because we have been looking at god the wrong way. Atheists often see gods and religion as being imposed from above, a bit like a totalitarian regime. But religious belief is more subtle and interesting than that. In these articles we lay out a new scientific vision that promises to, if not resolve ancient tensions, at least reset the terms of the debate.

Like it or not, religious belief is ingrained into human nature. And a good thing too: without it we would still be living in the Stone Age.

Viewing religion this way opens up new territory in the battle between science and religion, not least that religion is much more likely to persist than science.

Of course, the truth or otherwise of religion is not a closed book to science: the existence of a deity can be treated as a scientific hypothesis.

Meanwhile, society is gradually learning to live without religion by replicating its success at binding people together. This is something secularists ought to take seriously. Only by understanding what religion is and is not can we ever hope to move on.
